AN ACT for granting to his Majesty the sum of Fourteen Thousand One hundred and fifty pounds three shillings and two pence for the Service of the publick of this Province, and for laying a tax on the Inhabitants of the same for the payment thereof; And for Stamping the sum of Ten Thousand pounds Bills of Credit for the more imediate discharge of part thereof


Whereas the contingent Charges of this Government from the year 1729 and other moneys disposed of by this Assembly amounts to the sum of Fourteen Thousand One hundred and fifty pounds three Shillings and two pence, as appears by an Estimate in the Schedule to this Act annexed; for the payment whereof and other uses, Be it Enacted by his Excellency the Governour the Council and Assembly that the sum of Five Shillings current money shall be paid by every Tithable person in this Province to the several precinct Treasurers where such Tithables reside, and shall be by them collected annually for the space of Four years, that is to say the first payment shall be made in December in the year 1736, and so for three suceeding years. And whereas from the late distractions of this Province, and the many inconveniencies that have arisen therefrom to the Inhabitants thereof, which has rendered them incapable of raising so large a sum as will be necessary to discharge the publick debts immediately; Be it therefore Enacted by the Authority aforesaid, That the Commisioners appointed for Stamping and Signing the sum of Forty Thousand pounds by an Act passed this Present Session are hereby appointed and directed to stamp and sign the sum of Ten Thousand pounds in the several Species of Bills following; That is to say, Five hundred Twelve penny Bills, Five hundred two Shilling bills, Five hundred two shillings and six penny bills, Five hundred Five Shilling Bills, Five hundred Seven shilling and Six penny bills, Five hundred Ten Shilling Bills, One Thousand Twenty Shilling Bills, Seven hundred and 50 fourty shilling bills, One Thousand Three pound Bills, four hundred and Sixty, Five pound bills, One hundred and fifty, Ten pound bills: And when the aforesaid Sum of Ten Thousand pounds is so stamped and signed, the said Commisioners shall pay off the several sums appointed by this Act; except such part thereof, for which there is already money in hand: for the whole Charge of which they shall have and receive the sum of Six per Cent Which Bills of Credit shall be currant in all payments and be equal in value to any other publick Bills of this Province; and shall be sunk by such annual payments in proportion to the payment of the Poll tax, as is hereby directed to be raised, untill the whole sum of Ten Thousand pounds is discharged and paid. And be it further Enacted That if any person make default in paying their poll tax as aforesaid, the precinct Treasurer or his deputy shall have full power to make distress on such person, with allowance of Fifteen per Cent over and above the said levy to defray the charge the Treasurer shall be at in makeing such distress. And be it further Enacted, That the Several precinct Treasurers shall make up their Accounts of the aforementioned Taxes, at the meeting of the Assembly yearly; and if it should so happen that the moneys so raised shall exceed the sum of Ten Thousand pounds then the Surplusage shall be disposed of as the Governour Councill and Assembly shall direct, As shall also such part of the Ten Thousand pounds directed to be made, if any of that sum should not be disposed of, and to no other use and purpose whatsoever. And be it further Enacted That the said precinct Treasurers shall be allowed Ten per Cent for collecting and paying in the said Tax.
