AN ACT to Encourage Destroying of Vermin


Whereas the Encrease of Wolves and Other Vermin of late have been very prejudicial to the Inhabitants of this Government by distroying Stocks of Cattle Hoggs and Sheep for want of due Encouragement the Killing them is wholy neglected

Be it therefore Enacted by his Excellency the Palatin and the rest of the true and absolute Lords proprietors of the province of Carolina by and with the advise and consent of the rest of the Members of this General Assembly now Met at Edenton for the North East part of the said province And it is hereby Enacted by the Authority aforesaid That from and after the Ratification of this Act whosoever Shall by any ways or means whatsoever Kill and Destroy any Wolfe Panther Wild Cat or Squirrel Shall for every one so killed and Destroyed Take and receive out of the Publick Treasury the Sumes of premiums hereafter mentioned Videlicet for every Wolf Ten Shillings Every Panther Fifteen Shillings every Wild Cat Five Shillings and every Squirrill three pence, which Several premiums aforementioned Shall be paid by the Publick Treasurer or Officer or Officers that Shall receive the Publick Levys in Each and every respective precint within this Government upon a Certificate from any Justice of the Peace for the said precint which Justice is hereby required Impowered and directed to grant the Sume and also Seperate the Ears from the Scalp of every Such head as Shall be to him produced or Cause the Same to be done an in the said Certificate Shall Set forth and Signifie that Such Head or Scalp as is therein mentioned was produced to him with the Ears on And that he did cut and Seperate the Ears from the said Head or Scalp or Saw it don.

And for a further destroying of Wolves Be it further Enacted by the Authority aforesaid That each and every Indian of any Nation of Tributary Indians that belong to this Government Shall be Entituled to the Sume of Five Shillings for every Wolf or Panther by him or them killed or Destroyed Provided Such Wolf or Panther be killed in or neer any part of this Country Inhabited and Shall be Certified by any Justice of the Peace Either by his own view or the Oath of Some white person that Saw the Same while fresh and new killed upon producing the Head to the said Justice who is required Impowred and Directed to Cut of the Ears from it and a Certificate for the Same as aforesaid which Sume or premium Shall be paid by the Publick Treasurer or Such other Officer or Officers that Shall Collect and recieve the Publick Levys Provided always that this Act Shall Continue and be in full force from and after the Ratification hereof untill the End of the first sessions of the next Biennial Assembly to be held for this Government and no Longer.
