The North Carolina Historical Review was established in January 1924 as a medium of publication and discussion of history in North Carolina. The Review offers a number of regular features that have made it a definitive source for the study and understanding of the state’s history. These include carefully researched, handsomely illustrated articles that cover North Carolina and southern history from the colonial period to the present. Each issue also features numerous reviews of recent books about state, regional, and national history. Other regular highlights are an annual bibliography of books on North Carolina subjects or written by North Carolinians, an annual selected bibliography of theses and dissertations relating to North Carolina subjects, and an annual index in the October issue. The NCHR is published quarterly. It is possible to view the table of contents and book reviews for archived issues of the North Carolina Historical Review. Also included are the bibliographies and index published annually. Subscribe to the North Carolina Historical Review by visiting our online store. |

Guidelines for Submissions The editors of the North Carolina Historical Review and the Advisory Editorial Committee seek to publish articles and annotated documents pertaining to the history of North Carolina and adjacent states. The editors and the committee consider originality of material and interpretation, sources, clarity of thought, style, and interests of readers. Materials primarily genealogical are not accepted. Authors should submit for consideration two copies of their manuscripts and retain a copy for security. Text and notes must be double-spaced, and the latter should appear on separate sheets at the end of the essay. Authors should submit an additional copy of papers accepted for publication on a PC-compatible 3 1/2 inch diskette. The journal follows The Chicago Manual of Style, fourteenth edition (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1993), in matters of capitalization, punctuation, abbreviation, citation, and the like. For an abbreviated guide, see the Guide for Authors and Editors. A manuscript will not be considered if it is concurrently under consideration for any other journal or publication. Once accepted, an author grants and assigns to the Department of Cultural Resources the entire copyright of the contribution for the department's exclusive use. The copyright consists of any and all rights of whatever kind or nature now or hereafter protected by the copyright laws of the United States and of all foreign countries, in all languages and forms of communication, and the department shall be the sole proprietor thereof. The department shall pay the sum of $25.00 for the rights to the article. The editors are the final judge in editorial changes. The editors wish to receive for review nonfiction books relating to North Carolina and southern history.
